Brent Hall Road

Finchingfield is a gem, famous for its pond, bridge, greens and windmill in the heart of the village surrounded by a perfect scene of historic properties and set deep within rural countryside. It has seen little change over the years. This 1Ha site provided a rare opportunity for development in the village. The site was divorced from the historic core, yet was suitably embedded within the developed edge of the village and had little relationship with the outlying countryside. However, there was great resistance to this development from local people and the Local Authority.

Nigel Cowlin Ltd provided contributions to the evolution of designs for the site, seeking to ensure best fit with the context and minimise any potential for objectors to substantiate fear of harms to the character and appearance of the area. This was aided by detailed landscape and visual appraisal research and analysis in parallel with planning and heritage advice from other specialist consultants.

The planning application was refused by Braintree District Council, but later allowed at Appeal. We presented our Landscape and Visual Appraisal work at the planning hearing and our assertions about the suitability of this site were vindicated.
